More people encouraged to live on Caledonian Canal

SCOTTISH Canals has launched a campaign to encourage more people to live on the Caledonian Canal.

In the first stage of the campaign, five residential moorings are to be made available at the Seaport Marina at Muirtown Wharf at the eastern entrance to the canal.

The new “Living on Water” campaign is part of Scottish Canals’ drive to stimulate more activity on Scotland’s waterways.

Russell Thomson, the waterway manager for the Caledonian Canal, said: “The launch of ‘Living on Water’ is a hugely exciting step for Scottish Canals. The Caledonian Canal is an internationally renowned waterway which is increasingly popular within international sailing markets and this is a unique opportunity to snap up one of only a few residential moorings that will be available within walking distance from Inverness city centre.

“The Living on the Water campaign here will help us attract more people to live on the stunning 200 year old waterway and create an increasingly busy and attractive waterside destination here at Muirtown both for residents of Inverness to enjoy and for tourists coming to the Great Glen”

He added: “We think that the time is right now to show people what benefits they can find from choosing this alternative, waterway lifestyle. Living in a boat certainly offers a greener, more relaxed and more individual way of life. It can also be significantly cheaper than living ashore.

“Today’s boats are also warm, comfortable and well-specified coming in a range of styles and sizes and there is also the option to buy second-hand, so this lifestyle can appeal to a wide range of people. “

The new moorings will be released individually by online auction over coming months.
