Misery as UK planes remain on the ground

BRITAIN faced further travel chaos today after most flights in and out of the UK were grounded until tonight.

Edinburgh Airport was deserted with all flights grounded until 7pm, as the giant cloud of volcanic ash over Britain continued to cause disruption.

Many holidaymakers trying to return home following the Easter break have been stranded.

The air traffic control company NATS today warned that the situation was showing no signs of improvement, and ash from the Icelandic volcano meant restrictions would remain in place.

An Edinburgh Airport spokesman advised all passengers to check with their airlines before travelling. He said: "It's been very quiet here last night and this morning. Most people are aware of the situation."

Although a limited number of flights were running between Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland, none are arriving at Edinburgh.
