Ministers must fund Subway work

A VITAL £290 million upgrade of Glasgow's ageing Subway to prevent it being forced to close within a few years must be backed by ministers, Labour demanded yesterday.

Transport spokesman Charlie Gordon accused the SNP-led Scottish Government of dragging its heels over plans to overhaul the 113-year-old system, increasingly prone to faults.

Mr Gordon said: "Ministers need to realise the long term value of upgrading the Subway and come up with the funding soon so that work can begin as soon as possible."

Operators Strathclyde Partnership for Transport welcomed Labour publicly committing itself to the upgrade.

Transport Scotland said ministers "share SPT's belief in the long term future of the Subway" and were considering the plans.
