'Merchant Quarter' to mix business and pleasure in Aberdeen city centre

AMBITIOUS plans were announced yesterday to create a new "Merchant Quarter" in the heart of Aberdeen in a bid to boost business, tourism, leisure and retail opportunities.

It was revealed that the city council is working with a consortium of independent businesses to create the new development around The Green, one of the oldest parts of the centre.

The consortium plans to promote the area as a "cosmopolitan destination" for shopping, dining and socialising.

The proposals include extending weekday opening hours and Sunday opening for the shops, bars and restaurants in the Merchant Quarter and the creation of an "artistic gateway" and themed lighting, art, sculptures and street furniture around The Green.

Gordon McIntosh, the city council's director of enterprise, planning and infrastructure, said: "This is an exciting idea which could bring great benefits to the area, both for the businesses there and for city residents and visitors.

"This area is the historic heart of Aberdeen and was for many years a bustling, thriving hub of activity. In recent years, we have seen much of that activity returning with the establishment and growth of a cosmopolitan mixture of businesses."

He added: "The concept of a safe, secure and pleasant environment where people can socialise and enjoy the amenities and attractions away from the more boisterous atmosphere on Union Street is bound to be a winner."

Jonathan Day, chairman of the consortium, said the plan was to create a completely distinctive sector of the city centre.

He added: "The arrival of Union Square and the refurbishment of the street infrastructure has attracted unprecedented investment to the area."
