LITTLE Ramsay Douglas Wilson could not wait to become one of the first babies of the new decade – arriving in the world just 30 seconds after the bells rang in 2010.

In one of the earliest New Year births ever seen in Scotland, the 8lb baby boy made his debut at the Cresswell Maternity Wing of Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

But Ramsay was just the start of the babies bouncing their way into the Teenies.

Some arrivals were easier than others, however.

The mother of the Highlands' first baby had to endure a 12-hour journey through blizzards and treacherous roads on Hogmanay to reach hospital.

Joanna French, 26, went into labour in the early hours of Hogmanay.

An ambulance was called to take her and her partner, Antonio Penese, the 110 miles from their home in Glendale, Skye, to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

It was a long and arduous trip, and eventually the ambulance made it to the hospital at 7:30pm.

Joanna gave birth to her first child at four minutes past midnight, making 6lb 20z Emilia Jane Scotland's second baby of the new decade.

In Glasgow, the first baby of the New Year was born at the Queen Mother's Maternity Hospital, arriving at just seven minutes after midnight. Darcey Victoria Govan weighed 7lb 1oz.

The maternity hospital is due to close on 13 January. A spokeswoman there said: "It is especially poignant for us to have what is thought to be the first baby of 2010 in Glasgow."

Mother Amanda, 30, from Glasgow, said she was "over the moon" with the new arrival and, despite spending almost 24 hours in labour, was feeling well.

In Fife, Nicola Bremner was celebrating her second New Year baby.

The new youngster, James Diamond, weighed 8lb 1oz as he arrived at 53 minutes past midnight at Forth Park Hospital in Kirkcaldy. Ms Bremner has another son who was born on 1 January, 2002.

Little Mya Boyd was thought to be the first new arrival in the Lothians area, after she was born at 4:07am at St John's Hospital in Livingston.

Parents Lyndsay and William were delighted with their new arrival, who weighed 8lb 12oz.

Mrs Boyd, 21, said she went to hospital earlier in the day, but was sent home to wait a little longer.

"They said that she wasn't quite round the right way, and that I should wait at home while the contractions carried on," explained Mrs Boyd.

"So I went home and tried to stay up for the midnight bells, but I was really tired so I fell asleep.

"I woke up with my final contractions just as the countdown was starting on TV.

"By the time the fireworks started, my contractions were really fast and powerful, so I called my husband's aunt and she drove me to the hospital for about 3am, and I gave birth an hour later."

The first baby at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, which is home to Scotland's biggest maternity unit, was 7lb 5oz Nikita Sakurs.

Nikita's parents, Jelena Sakura and Andrei Sakurs, were celebrating after their son was born at 6:32am.

The first baby of the new year in Aberdeen arrived at 12 minutes past midnight.

Susan Ord gave birth to a girl called Lily, who weighed 7lb 5oz.
