Marriage by telephone 'not a sham'

A HOSPITAL doctor who got married by telephone has failed to convince a judge the wedding was a sham.

Munazza Ahmed, 26, went against her parents' wishes and married a car dealer she had met over the internet.

She has never met her husband in person, either before or after the wedding, the Court of Session in Edinburgh heard.

Judge Lord Stewart was also told there were suspicions that the marriage was a scam by Nadeem Kazmi to get round immigration rules.

Munazza Ahmed, of Howard Place, Edinburgh, went to court to ask for a decree of nullity, ending the marriage.

But in a written decision issued yesterday, Lord Stewart ruled that he had no power to declare the marriage void as it appeared to be valid under Pakistani law.

The judge suggested that the doctor should take her case to a court there.
