Defence solicitor Paul Smith said the men had been good friends for ten years. They had been drinking together at Mr McDonagh’s house and then went to Gaffney’s home in Whitecraig, East Lothian, and continued drinking.

Sheriff Holligan jailed Gaffney for 15 months on the stabbing charge and sentenced him to 25 days for headbutting Pc Bird.
