Man seriously injured after birthday party attack

A FATHER is fighting for his life after being attacked by a gang of men while celebrating his daughter's 21st birthday.

The family had hired a private function room in Glasgow for the party on Saturday night.

It is thought the 43-year-old father had become aware of a disturbance in the pub's car park, which involved his daughter.

He went outside to try and calm the situation but was seriously assaulted by a group of eight to ten men.

The birthday celebrations had been held at the Woodend Bar in Hamilton Road, Mount Vernon.

Strathclyde Police said the group of men had not been at the party, which was held in a private function room.

Emergency services were called and the victim was taken by ambulance to the Southern General Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for a serious head injury.

Police, who are treating the incident as attempted murder, have been making local enquiries since the attack and checking CCTV footage in an effort to identify those involved.

Detective Sergeant John Semple said: "This was an extremely violent attack on this man who was simply trying to calm down a situation and get back to his daughter's birthday celebrations.

"Unfortunately she witnessed her dad being attacked and, sadly, her birthday will now be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

"Enquiries are still at an early stage and we are still trying to establish exactly why the suspects were there as we know they hadn't been invited along to the party."

A police spokeswoman added: "A 21-year-old man was arrested for an alleged breach of the peace and assault on a 21-year-old woman during the incident."

At the Woodend Bar last night management refused to comment.
