Hide AdMusician Phil Hague, an eyewitness who was driving to work during the incident, told the Scotsman: “I thought there may have been an accident ahead but when the traffic edged on a bit I noticed what was happening.
“The man had jumped the central reservation and wobbled across the fast lane a bit before coming back to my side.
“By this point I was alongside him and he almost had a go at getting on my bonnet. [Then] he moved down the road, opening the passenger door of the car behind me before shutting it and continuing his journey.” He added: “He had grazes on his head and arm, so I thought something serious had happened.”
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We received reports at 6.50am of a man on the live carriageway of the M8 at junction five eastbound close to Shotts.
“Officers attended and one man has been detained.”
