The incident took place in the stairwell of a block of flats in Coatfield Lane, Leith, at about 11am.

Police said the victim had left his flat to take out a rubbish bag when he passed the men loitering in the common stair.

After passing the men a second time and dropping off another bag of rubbish in the bin, the man was walking back to his flat when he was hit on the head.

Two of his attackers then held him down before another man threatened him with a knife and demanded money.

Police said cash was stolen from the man before his attackers made off towards Constitution Street.
