Forth Coastguard sent cliff rescue teams from Montrose and Stonehaven and they recovered the man from the water’s edge up the cliff, where he was checked over by ambulance crew.

Forth Coastguard said he was “cold but uninjured”.

The dog will require veterinary treatment but was recovered from the water.

According to the Met Office, temperatures in Angus were a chilly 6C (42.8F) this afternoon.

A Forth Coastguard spokesman said: “Don’t put yourself at risk by attempting a rescue.

“The water is especially cold at this time of the year which only adds to the dangers of going in after an animal or another person.

Dog walkers should keep dogs on a lead near cliffs and deep water.”
