Man proposes to girlfriend by documenting their relationship in Lego

Ben Anderson, 36, told his girlfriend Kirsten Dally, 37, that they were going to the cinema to watch the new Jason Bourne film.

But she was astonished when instead of the movie trailers, they were shown an animation of the best bits of their relationship narrated by a Lego Ben.

It features their first kiss in the rain, going on holiday to Thailand and ends with him proposing to Kirsten - who obviously said yes.

It was put together by teenage Lego animation genius Morgan Spence, 17, from Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, who has previously created viral videos from the bricks.

Ben, a forestry manager from Worcester said: “It was bloody nerve-wracking.

“The cinema told me what the listing was for the adverts so I knew the sequence.

“I was counting it down and knew mine was next.

“Hearing your own voice was cringey.

“Kirsten just couldn’t believe it. At one point she elbowed me in the ribs and asked me what the hell I had done. She was quite overwhelmed.”

Ben got the idea for the video after trying to come up with a unique way to propose and seeing Morgan’s previous amazing viral videos.

In the two-and-a-half-minute long video, Ben’s Lego character speaks directly to Kirsten, who works in marketing, saying he wants to tell her “how happy you make me”.

He then narrates the story of how he and his fiancee met online before going on their first date, which featured a “terrible icebreaker”.

The Lego couple are shown sharing their first kiss, going to a James Bond premiere and going on holiday to Thailand and Poland.

It then cuts back to Lego Ben, where he asks the real-life Kirsten to stand up and says to her: “I realise I’m so, so lucky and I was wondering, will you marry me?”

After it was shown in the Electric Cinema in Birmingham on August 6 the real-life Ben got down on one knee and popped the question to a gobsmacked Kirsten.

As soon as Kirsten said yes, there was a huge round of applause from the fellow cinema-goers.

Footage from inside the cinema taken by staff has been added to the end of the clip which creator Morgan has put online.

Morgan said it took him two months to put the animation together and involved custom-made Lego characters of Ben and Kirsten.

Morgan, from Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, who has just finished school, said: “Ben wrote to me after seeing my work online asking about the opportunity to make a film for him.

“He had a big plan to propose to his girlfriend in the Electric Cinema in Birmingham. He wanted me to produce a Lego animation describing how they met in a film style almost like Forrest Gump sitting on a park bench.

“It’s unlike anything I had done before. It’s a bit cheesy but that just made me like it more.

“The t-shirt the Ben figure is wearing he actually owns. The music and locations in it are very personal to them. I really enjoyed doing it.

“Ben emailed me just after the proposal to say it had all gone well. Kirsten was over the moon and they were both delighted. It’s a very happy ending.”

The couple have yet to plan their big day but are considering incorporating Lego into the nuptials.

Ben said: “We could use Lego - Morgan’s idea was to use the characters as cake toppers.

“We’re going to have to watch the film again because we couldn’t take it in. I’m really happy and really relieved.”
