Man injured in Glenshee paragliding accident

A man has suffered life-threatening injuries in a paragliding accident, police said.

The 58-year-old, named locally as Martin Yarrow, was airlifted from the scene following the incident at Cairnwell, Glenshee, just after 1pm yesterday. He was due to be taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

Mr Yarrow, an oil services operations manager with Aberdeen-based Sub Sea 7, is a member of Aberdeen Hang Gliding and Para Gliding Club.

Bob Dunthorn, the club’s chief coach said: “There were a number of recreational pilots on the Cairnwell mountain in the Glenshee area. Everybody was out for a day’s flying and one of our club members, Martin Yarrow, had an accident on launch and this resulted in injury to the pilot. The pilot was subsequently airlifted and transferred to hospital. All of our thoughts are with him and with the family.”

A spokeswoman for Sub Sea 7 said: “We can confirm that one of our employees has been injured in paragliding incident. Our thoughts are with the family at this time.”

Police Scotland said ambulance crews and a rescue helicopter went to the scene following the accident.

The force said in a statement: “At 1.02pm on Sunday Police Scotland responded to a report of a 58-year-old male injured in a paragliding accident at Cairnwell, Glenshee.

“Ambulance and Rescue 137 attended and the male was conveyed by helicopter to hospital with potentially life threatening injuries.”
