Man dies on railway line at Berwick

A Tweedmouth man was killed after being hit by a train on the main east coast railway line on Friday morning.

The 58-year-old, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and the coroner has been informed.

A spokesman for British Transport Police (BTP) said: “We were called to Berwick upon Tweed railway station at 8.44am on Friday, 12 February, following a report of a man being struck by a train.

“Colleagues from Northumbria Police and North East Ambulance Service also attended, but sadly a 58-year-old man from Tweedmouth was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious and his family are being informed.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

There have been a number of fatalities on the railway line near Berwick in recent months.
