Crews extinguished a small fire in the kitchen and removed a man found in the property. A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “He was taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary by ambulance but sadly it was later confirmed that he had died.”

Police say the death is being treated as unexplained until the results of a post-mortem examination are known, but there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
