The man was rescued and taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Meanwhile another man was pulled to safety after falling into Peterhead harbour.

He was kept afloat by a crewman from the Peterhead lifeboat and both were recovered by a vessel which took them to the lifeboat.

The incident took place less than 50 metres from the lifeboat station.

Andy Brown, RNLI coxswain at Peterhead, said: "The number of crew volunteers, and the speed of arrival on the scene, was commendable."

He added that the crew "performed very efficiently" to minimise the man's time in the water.
