Man dies after taking ill on Ben Nevis

A YOUNG hillwalker has died in hospital after becoming ill as he climbed Ben Nevis.

At around 7.30pm yesterday two mountain rescue teams from Lochaber and RAF Kinloss were scrambled together with a helicopter from Stornoway Coastguard.

The man, who has not been named but is believed to have been in his mid 20s, was located above Half Way Lochan and he was airlifted to Belford Hospital in Fort William.

Medical staff fought to stabilise him, but he was pronounced dead at around 11.15pm the same evening.

Northern Constabulary said a report of the circumstances surrounding the man's death will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
