Man cut free after foot gets stuck in fence

A MAJOR emergency services operation was launched to free a man whose foot was stuck in a fence.

Two fire crews, two police cars and an ambulance were dispatched to Cluny Avenue, Morningside, yesterday when a man got into difficulty trying to vault a fence leading to the railway line below.

The man, described as being in his forties, fell and injured his arm, and could not free himself.

Fire crews arrived at around 2:50pm and cut away a section of the fence to free the man's foot. He was taken to hospital.

A Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: "Crews called out to the scene were told the man had impaled his foot on the fence, but on arrival discovered it had simply been stuck.

"He was in a great deal of pain and distress and so could not be removed from the area.

"Fire-fighters then used cutting gear to cut away an old gate, allowing paramedics to get through."
