Man in court over fatal stabbing

A MAN has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 44-year-old former Edinburgh man who was found dead on Tuesday night.

Derek Kinghorn, from Howegate, Hawick, was accused of repeatedly stabbing Brian Mair on the body with a knife, or similar instrument, and murdering him.

He made no plea or declaration and the case was continued for further examination.

Kinghorn appeared in private at Jedburgh Sheriff Court yesterday afternoon and was remanded in custody by Sheriff Donald Corke.

The body of 44-year-old Mr Mair, of Wellfield Road, Hawick, was discovered at a flat in the town shortly after 11pm.

Lothian and Borders Police launched a major investigation involving specialist trained officers, CID officers and uniformed police. Door-to-door inquiries are still taking place.
