Man in court on Elaine Doyle murder charge

A MAN has appeared in court charged with the murder of a teenage girl 26 years ago.

Elaine Doyle, 16, died on her way home from a disco in Greenock on 1 June, 1986. Her body was found the next day in a lane less than 50 yards from her home.

John Docherty, 48, from the town, appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court yesterday charged with her murder. He is further accused of theft. He made no plea during the private hearing and was remanded in custody.

Elaine was last seen alive by two friends after she left the disco in Laird Street. Police launched a fresh appeal in 2011 over her death.
