Man appears in court over death of Aberdeen man 40 years ago

Kazi Ahmad, 41, was found on the bedroom floor of a flat in the Rosemount Viaduct area of Aberdeen in October 1978.

At the time of his death the father-of-four was the part owner of the Raj Dulal restaurant, which was based on the city’s Dee Street.

He had moved up to the city from Perth two years before he was found dead in the city centre building.

Mr Ahmad was married and his wife lived in Bangladesh with their children. He had been on holiday to the South Asian country just a few months before his death, 38 years ago.

Police launched a major investigation following the discovery of his body, believing that his death was suspicious. Investigating officers at the time were hoping to trace a former employee who had worked at the restaurant.

And yesterday it emerged that officers had arrested a 62-year-old man in the Birmingham area in connection with the case, almost 40 years after the restaurateur’s death.

The man was arrested on Saturday and appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday afternoon to face a murder charge.

Riasat Khan, of no fixed abode, made no plea and no declaration.

He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear in court again within the next eight days.

Mr Ahmad was believed to have lived in the flat where his body was found, along with other restaurant staff.

His employees, and one of his cousins, made the grim discovery as they entered the third floor property.

The company also owned a restaurant of the same name in Perth.

A relative of Mr Ahmad, who worked in the restaurant, said at the time: “He was a partner at the Raj Dulal business.

“He went to Aberdeen about two years ago to open and manage the restaurant there.”

Mr Ahmad had lived in Scotland for 16 years.
