Make a meal of charity’s call for help

SHOPPERS are being asked to donate an item of food to be handed out to homeless people in the Lothians.

The Million Meal Appeal, being run by Sainsbury’s and the homelessness charity Edinburgh Cyrenians, takes place this weekend.

As part of the Cyrenians’ Good Food Project, the appeal aims to help disadvantaged people make long-term improvements in their lives.

As well as dishing out supermarket food that would otherwise be wasted, the project includes training and work experience and classes in health, cooking and food hygiene.

Sainsbury’s will match every meal donated at its branches.

Christopher Somerville, manager of Cyrenians Good Food depot, said: “We’re delighted to be a part of the Million Meal Appeal, which offers people the chance to make a direct impact in fighting food poverty”.
