The cut began at around 9:15am due to a fault at the sub station at Randolph Lane.

At least four postcodes are affected, with power outages reported at scores of premises in Great Stuart Street, Charlotte Square and Melville Street in the city centre.

Traffic lights were also out, though Edinburgh’s tram network was unaffected.

A spokesperson for Scottish Power said that at least 500 customers were affected by the cut in the first hour but added that all are now back to normal.

They said: “There was a fault feeding from the sub station at Randolph Lane.

“All customers were back on within the hour with some only off for a second. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Postcodes EH1, EH2, EH3 and EH4 were affected.
