Lothian pupils streets ahead in green travel

EAST Lothian schoolchildren are the greenest in the country when travelling to class.

A national survey reveals that 60 per cent of East Lothian pupils walk to school – the Scottish average is 45 per cent – while 6.4 per cent cycled and 1.5 per cent came by scooter or skateboard.

Only 12 per cent are driven to school. The data, recorded between 7 and 11 September last year, was released in the annual National Hands Up Survey 2009 run by Sustrans and school travel coordinators.

Iain Reid, East Lothian school travel coordinator, said: "This is a great result for East Lothian and a testimony to how much effort children, young people and parents in the county put in to find sustainable ways of getting to school.

"I hope that we can keep the momentum going and get even more children and young people walking and cycling to school next year."
