Long overdue: tapestry seen in full glory

Scotland's answer to the famous Bayeux Tapestry goes on show in its full glory in Edinburgh today.

The Battle of Prestonpans Tapestry - actually a work of embroidery - is made of 104 one-metre panels embroidered by 200 volunteers from across Scotland. It shows different scenes from the early campaign of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745.

Since it was completed in July, it has toured several venues in the Highlands, but because of its length was shown in sections or doubled up. It will hang in the Dovecot Studios on Infirmary Street in its full length.

Dr Gordon Prestoungrange, chairman of the Battle of Prestonpans Heritage Trust, said: "Here at Dovecot it will hang in one continuous round with fantastic light conditions, so it can really be appreciated fully.

"Praise for the tapestry has been overwhelming - from all sorts of people and all ages. They seem to really appreciate the fantastic quality of embroidery and the meticulous attention to historical detail."
