Local Round-up: Students get work in shape for exhibition

AN exhibition of work by Telford College students will go on display at the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.

Pieces by the HND contemporary art students will be shown at the Newhaven workshop from tomorrow until next Wednesday.

Telford's lecturer in fine art, Jennie Temple, said: "It is always a great pleasure for the college to be showcasing our students' work within the surroundings of Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop."

Competition hots up for curry house

Queen's Spice restaurant in South Queensferry has won a place in the regional finals of a competition to find the best South Asian restaurant in the UK.

It was nominated by Edinburgh West Liberal Democrat MP Mike Crockart.

The annual Lyca Tiffin Cup has received 60 nominations from across the UK. Queen's Spice will now do battle with others from across Scotland, with the winner going on to the UK final.

City tea party for Amnesty

AMNESTY International was today staging an all-day Amnestea Party at Loopy Lorna's Tea House, Church Hill Theatre, 33a Morningside Road, to mark the start of celebrations for the campaign group's 50th anniversary.

Hosted by the St Mark's Amnesty group, the party runs until 5pm.

Raising some pennies while dropping pounds

RESIDENTS in the city are being encouraged to raise cash for a cancer charity - while dropping pounds ahead of their summer holidays.

Macmillan Cancer Support is asking local people to organise their own fundraising walk to raise money for people affected by cancer. Fundraising manager for Edinburgh, Pamela Williamson, said: "As well as looking great on the beach, you'll also be able to have a guilt-free break knowing you've raised money for people with cancer."

The Salvation Army Trading Company's charity shop on Forrest Road is celebrating its first birthday next Friday by hosting a mega discount day.

New high for TV in Lothians

FREEVIEW HD will soon be available to nearly 455,000 more homes around Edinburgh as the digital switchover begins in the STV region.

The digital switchover will begin on Wednesday, in time for one of the biggest television events of the year - Wimbledon.
