Local Round-up: Partnership's pedal power helps cyclists

LOCAL environmental charity the Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust and Capita Carillion have joined forces for Sustainability Week and World Environment Day.

They have been working together to help improve Edinburgh's Innertube, an off-road network of paths which connects the whole city.

Staff from Capita Carillion have been carrying out conservation work, making the routes safer and more accessible for the community.

MYTHS about food poisoning are being targeted during the city's Food Safety Week.

The city council is hosting displays in the Capital's libraries in conjunction with the Food Standards Agency.

Councillor Robert Aldridge said: "We should never be complacent about food safety."

Mothers' Union summit in city

THE man behind this week's independent review on the "pornification" of children is to answer questions on his report in Edinburgh tomorrow.

Reg Bailey, the Mothers' Union's chief executive, is due speak at the organisation's general meeting at the Usher Hall from 10.30am.

Universities' green effort hailed

TWO of the Capital's universities have been named in the top 50 of an annual "green league".

Edinburgh Napier came 13th and Edinburgh University 47th in People & Planet's survey of environmental and ethical performance.

Minister visits Drumbrae hub project

Scotland's Infrastructure Secretary, Alex Neil, was today set to visit the new 5.7 million community hub being built at Drumbrae.

The hub project will include a new library, day care centre, youth cafe and community facilities.

Mr Neil was due to tour the site and meet construction workers.

Joining him on the visit was Councillor Paul Edie, health and social care leader at the city council.

Rugby students ready to have a ball in Brazil

EDINBURGH University's rugby team are taking on Brazil during a tour of the South American country.

The university team is playing four matches in Brazil, including two games against a national side that is ranked 28th in the world.

Edinburgh will also play Brazil under-23s and a regional select side.

The matches have been arranged to help promote rugby in the South American country ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, in which rugby sevens will be included.
