Local Round-up: Leith Brigade boys are riding high

The 10th Leith Boys Brigade has ended its 2010-11 year on a high, boasting two local head boys and six cups for drill and football.

The Leith brigade has also found itself with a full membership again, as the organisation enjoys something of a comeback.

Among the 10th's ranks last year were both Calum Doyle, head boy of Leith Academy and Andrew Dove, head boy of Portobello.

The brigade also won six out of eight of the sporting contests it entered.

Endurance trek to city raises cash for cancer

An 11-DAY fundraising trek across Scotland finished in the Capital on Friday.

The six participants raised around 1500 for the Teenager Cancer Trust by travelling by canoe from Inverness to Fort William, to Glasgow by foot, and then to the Capital by canoe. Siobhan O'Hara of the Teenage Cancer Trust said: "We are so grateful for all the time, money and effort that the expedition team put into the expedition."

Whiski ready to line 'em up

A NEW whisky-tasting bar will be holding its official opening tomorrow night in Edinburgh.

The Whiski Rooms on North Bank Street, which is an offshoot of a bar by the same name on the Royal Mile, will act as a shop and bistro.

It will offer customers the chance to sample new whiskies.

Beer toasts its own success

A LIQUORICE infused beer created by Caledonian Brewing is the regional winner of Sainsbury's Great British Beer Hunt 2011.

Flying Dutchman Wit Bier will go on sale nationwide for three weeks from September 7, along with 15 other regional winners.

Gallop along to charity ceilidh

There will be a midsummer ceilidh at Stockbridge House in Cheyne Street on July 1 to raise money for World Horse Welfare. The event, which costs 10, will feature the Cosmic Ceilidh Band, and is bring-a-bottle. For more information or tickets call Helen on 07855 945 772.

Torch run lights the way for world harmony

A BURNING torch will be carried through Edinburgh at the weekend as part of the annual World Harmony Run.

The torch, which is intended to symbolise international peace and harmony, is travelling through Scotland this week after leaving John O'Groats on Sunday. Alison Johnston MSP will take it from the Scottish Parliament to the top of Arthur's Seat on Saturday, and it will then travel to the Edinburgh 10s Rugby event in Stockbridge.

On Sunday it will be carried by Brownies from the Capital.
