Local news: Rotarian day out for Jack Kane children

THE Rotary Club of Edinburgh organised a kids' day out for disadvantaged children at the Jack Kane Community Centre in Niddrie with the help of fellow Rotarians from across the Lothians and 30 sixth formers from local schools.

The club entertained 199 disadvantaged children from 13 schools in the Edinburgh area last week, with the youngsters enjoying a range of 28 activities including face painting, bouncy castles and a cuddle corner from Gorgie City Farm.

Bollywood fundraiser

There will be a charity Bollywood night to raise money for victims of the Japanese earthquake on June 18.

Tasters from Bread Street

There will be taster sessions in a variety of alternative therapies at The Healthy Life Centre in Bread Street on Sunday.

Mary Erskine ready to 'zumba'

A FUNDRAISING zumba class has been set up to raise money for an Edinburgh charity which supports young people with cancer and their families.

It's Good 2 Give is hosting the charity class at The Mary Erskine School's sports centre on June 19.

Bear truths from Animals Asia experts

TWO experts on animal welfare are to give a presentation on the work of the charity Animals Asia on June 22.

Dr Jill Robinson MBE and Dr Heather Bacon will talk about the progress made to end the farming of bears for their bile in China and Vietnam.

Merchiston pupils bring master's music to life

A MEMORIAL concert has been held for a former school master of Merchiston Castle.

Donald Sprinck worked at the school from 1946 to 1972. He was an accomplished composer, and current Merchiston pupils performed some of his pieces at the concert. David Woodward, a close friend of Mr Sprinck, said: "It was a special joy for me to hear Donald's music performed by a new generation of pupils, encouraged, taught and assisted by the present members of the staff."
