List of flood-prone areas drawn up for first time

PARTS of Scotland most at risk from floods are to be listed for the first time under a newly launched consultation.

New guidance will also be published to ensure agencies which help manage floods know what their roles and responsibilities are.

The consultation will be run by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) and the fresh guidance will be compiled by the Scottish Government.

Environment minister Stewart Stevenson said the guidance was a major step forward in improving flood responses.

He said: "Flooding can have a devastating impact on homes and businesses. I welcome these measures which are designed to reduce the risk of flooding and ensure that, where floods occur, they are effectively managed.

"Our sustainable flood-management guidance will form the blueprint upon which Sepa, local authorities, and Scottish Water will deliver their flood risk management responsibilities.

"Furthering our understanding of flooding will also help us develop long-term, sustainable solutions."
