Lioness wears the trousers

TWO lions meeting for the first time at Edinburgh Zoo was meant to be a match made in heaven – but things got off to a bad start when they ended up in a tussle for dominance instead.

Staff are hoping that two-year-old Jay, who has arrived from Bristol Zoo, will be a potential suitor for feisty 15-year-old lioness Kamlesh

Alison Maclean, head carnivore keeper at Edinburgh Zoo, said: “Jay has been submissive to Kamlesh and she is definitely the boss in the relationship for now anyway. We expect this will change when Jay reaches sexually maturity.

“We are hopeful that they will become a breeding pair and produce cubs in the not too distant future, which would be fantastic for us at the zoo and the ongoing conservation and breeding programme for these endangered animals.”
