Libraries amnesty part of
national celebration week

A BOOK amnesty is giving borrowers the chance to have fees waived for the return of overdue items.

All fines for late books, CDs or DVDs will be written off next week at all libraries across the Capital.

The initiative – running from February 9-15 – is part of National Libraries Day
celebrations.

However, the amnesty will not apply to fees for damaged items, or normal loan charges for CDs and DVDs.

City culture convener Councillor Richard Lewis said he hoped the amnesty idea would encourage people who had avoided libraries because they owed fees to start reusing the facilities.

Cllr Lewis said: “We want everyone to rediscover the joy of visiting their local library.

“We’re hoping to welcome back as many people as possible to Edinburgh’s libraries and hope that everyone takes this opportunity to start afresh with us.”
