The 28-year-old victim was walking home along a well-lit path across the park when she was approached by an armed man at around 1am on Thursday.

Two good samaritans came to the victim’s aid following the attack, which took place just minutes from Leith police station on a path across the park from Links Place.

Hours after the rape was reported, officers could be seen conducting fingertip searches along the hedge skimming the walkway, which separates the park from tennis courts and bowling greens to the north.

A forensics expert collected evidence at the scene, which was cordoned off all day and is overlooked by a row of houses.

A Police Scotland spokesman said the man is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday.
