Lead singer of The Lapelles Gary Watson dies after River Clyde accident

THE frontman of a Scottish indie music band has died after an accident on the banks of the Clyde.

Gary Watson, lead singer with The Lapelles, lost his fight for life on his 22nd birthday.

The news was revealed by the East Kilbride-based band on their Facebook page.

Their message said: “It’s with shock, heavy hearts and sadness that we have to let you know the news that Gary sadly passed away this morning as a result of injuries sustained in a tragic accident last night.

“Today was his 22nd birthday.

“We are lost for words and struggling to process such a tragedy.

“Gary was a creative force, a man who without his vision this band wouldn’t exist.

“We have lost a friend, a brother, a hero.

“At the moment it doesn’t seem real.

“We send our deepest condolences to Gary’s family and would appreciate your respect in allowing them and us some peace whilst we grieve.

Forever in our hearts, with peace you go.”

A source close to the band said: “Gary had been out with friends on Saturday night celebrating his birthday.

“He had been in great form, laughing and joking.

“The news has come as an unbelievable shock to everyone.”

It is believed that Gary was rushed by paramedics to hospital, however doctors were unable to save him.

The source added: “The Lapelles were a real up and coming force on the Scottish music scene with an ever-increasing fan-base throughout the country, but particularly in and around Glasgow.”

Family member Angela Killen Watson wrote on social media: “It’s absolutely devastating and it’s his birthday as well.

“The whole family are devastated. Can’t take it in. Surreal and totally wrong.”
