Land reform campaigner in message to city authorities

Land reform is as relevant to the centre of Edinburgh as to remote parts of Scotland.

That will be the message from land reform campaigner Andy Wightman at Thursday's public meeting organised by the Edinburgh Green Party.

In his latest book, The Poor had no Lawyers, Mr Wightman - who lives in Inverleith - accuses the city authorities of mismanaging Edinburgh's historical common good assets, while also taking a side-swipe at the Edinburgh legal establishment for its complicity in controversial land dealings across the centuries.

He said: "In Scotland's towns and cities is to be found the oldest form of common land dedicated to public use, in medieval burgh charters. Over the centuries, however, much of this has disappeared through nepotism and corruption."

The free event - So what has land reform got to do with Edinburgh? - is at the Quaker Meeting House on Victoria Terrace at 7.30pm.
