Labourer jailed for killing man with knife

A labourer has been jailed for seven years after killing a man with his own knife.

Alexander McLennan, 56, had been beaten with an iron bar before John Cassidy, 31, struck him with a knife as they clashed in Kingsway, Dundee on January 7.

Cassidy was originally accused of murdering Mr McLennan but pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of culpable homicide.

Lord Bracadale told him at the High Court in Edinburgh: “Even accepting that he produced the knife first, having disarmed him, you went on to stab him twice, and one of the blows was to the heart.”

Ross Ramsay, 30, and Steven Batchelor, 31, admitted assaulting Mr McLennan by punching, kicking and stamping on him, and were jailed for 45 months and 40 months.
