Knife dealers told to act to secure licence

KNIFE dealers have been urged to apply for new licences soon, instead of waiting until the June deadline.

From 1 June, any business that sells or hires out certain types of knives, swords and bladed items will require a Knife Dealer's Licence.

The city council has urged businesses to apply for the licence as soon as possible.

Under the mandatory licensing scheme introduced by the Scottish Government, a business must keep written records of the identification that was sought to prove the person buying or hiring the knife or blade was at least 18 years.

Councillor Colin Keir, convener of the council's regulatory and licensing committee, praised the new government scheme.

He said: "I welcome this new licensing scheme which will further tighten the sales of knives and blades and keep them off our streets.

"Our priority it to keep the city as safe as possible and we will work closely with our partners the police to ensure that knife dealers follow the conditions of their licence."
