The 29-year-old is said to have links with the criminal underworld and survived an attempt on his life three years ago and police said they believe three masked men were involved in the shooting.

The getaway car – a Volkswagen Golf with the registration YF55 EZZ – was set on fire and dumped around six miles from the scene in Yetts Hole Road, Glenmavis, Airdrie.

Detectives said the car had cloned plates, was stolen in September from the Rutherglen area and originally had the registration AD04 UFC.

Detective Superintendent Michael Orr, who is leading the murder inquiry, said today: "As a result of appeals, a witness has come forward who saw the Volkswagen Golf leaving the car park.

"Apparently this car was being driven recklessly at the roundabout outside Asda. Cars had to swerve to avoid it.

"We believe that the vehicle then headed onto the M80 eastbound."

Mr Orr said officers were still trying to discover the route the suspects took to Yetts Hole Road.

He said: "The type of individuals involved in this crime have to be caught. It is completely unacceptable for mindless thugs to carry out a

shooting spree in a busy car park.

"Many of the patrons are young mothers with children who could have been injured during this incident, or by the car speeding from the scene.

"I would ask those who know something to consider this. Would they want their loved ones put at risk by the actions of these criminals?"

Mr Orr said people could also contact Crimestoppers anonymously with information.

He said: "I would again urge members of the public to think back to Wednesday afternoon. Does anyone remember seeing this Golf being driven erratically? Did anyone see the occupants, either in the car or leaving the vehicle?

"We have received an encouraging response from people we have spoken to. However, as with every investigation of this nature, there will always be people reluctant to talk to us. I would urge them to reconsider."

People can also talk to officers at the Incident Caravan based at the supermarket car park.
