John first joined the ranks of the fire service in 1992, and has steadily ascended to his current role after stints in fire stations across his home city of Glasgow.

“Being part of a bigger team that supports and helps individuals and also whole communities has been very rewarding and I look forward to continuing this in the East of Scotland.”

John left behind an eight-year career in steel works when he embarked on his new career in the fire service in 1992.

He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Lead Firefighter, Sub-Officer and Station Officer, successfully completing numerous rescues, before accepting more senior managerial roles.

He has also held the ranks of Deputy Commander and Local Senior Officer of the North Lanarkshire Area.

Looking to the future, John said “I’m delighted to have been given this opportunity and I look forward to working with colleagues in the East, including our fire board members, to help shape and deliver the best possible service to the communities in the East of Scotland.

“My role is to promote consistency and make sure we continue to deliver the excellent fire and rescue services that the public expect and deserve.”

John’s role as the new Deputy Assistant Chief Officer will mean he oversees the Local Senior Officers who work with local communities to maintain dedicated fire and rescue services across the area.

“I’ve been taken out my comfort zone and I’m looking forward to the challenges that come with this new role,” said John. “I’m very fortunate in that I’m surrounded by a range of expertise across the East which I’m sure will be a great benefit to me.”

The Glasgow Caledonian University business management graduate – whose hobbies include football, golf and music – has a passion for community safety and is keen to get the message out to local residents about the importance of preventative home safety measures, which the service provides.

John said: “Our visits are designed to be a straightforward process for householders, the visits are easy to arrange and will be conducted at a time suitable for the individual.

“They only take around half an hour to complete and see local crews assess risks before providing advice to householders and families. Crews also fit smoke alarms where needed.”

He added: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service continues to evolve and I am proud to be part of this evolution.”
