Mr Spence found himself on the receiving end of abusive tweets and emails after he spoke of the current board changes at Ibrox.

He said: “John McLelland, who was chairman of the old club . . . some people will tell you the club . . . well the club that died, possibly coming back in terms of the new chairman.”

The BBC is said to have received over 400 complaints, and it has been rumoured that the veteran reporter had even considered voluntary redundancy over the issue.

The presenter has been given the backing of management at BBC Scotland with the National Union of Journalists also condemning the abuse.

Mr Spence, who lives outside Dundee, used his Twitter account to thank police for their help.

He wrote: “Thanks to @TaysidePolice for a reassuring call there after an incident earlier today. This is getting out of hand.”

“Was out for a walk with my wife...Abuse on twitter is one thing but when people start on you in the street with your wife that’s another entirely.”

Mr Spence said he did not wish to comment.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Tayside Division is aware of the matter and appropriate advice was given. We will discuss further with the individual.”
