Abbie died at the city's Yorkhill Hospital on February 8, 2008, following severe injuries to her head and abdomen.

During the trial at the High Court in Glasgow, Jamieson tried to blame the child's 29-year-old mother for her death.

Sentencing him today, temporary judge Alastair Stewart QC said: "The jury found you guilty of the brutal murder of a defenceless child.

"The nature of the injuries suggest strongly that this was not some momentary loss of control.

"The gravity of the offence was compounded by the fact that, far from showing any remorse, you sought to lay blame on Abbie's mother."

Yesterday the jury took just under four hours to convict Jamieson of the charge of inflicting blunt force trauma to the baby's head and body "by means to the prosecutor unknown".

Jamieson's relatives sobbed as the guilty verdict was read out.

As he was led from the court today, a woman shouted out: "We're right behind you. Keep strong."
