Islamic studies scholar given role in new university centre

A LEADING scholar on Islamic studies has been appointed to head up a new Capital centre.

Professor Hugh Goddard, an internationally recognised scholar currently based at the University of Nottingham, will lead research on the impact of Islam on the contemporary world at Edinburgh University.

He will head the new HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World from May 1.

Edinburgh University principal, Professor Sir Timothy O'Shea, said: "We are delighted to welcome Professor Goddard to the University of Edinburgh, which has a history of scholarship in Islamic studies.

"The development of this new centre is an important milestone and this is a terrific opportunity to broaden and build upon our existing strength in Islamic studies."

The centre has been set up with funding from HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, chairman of the Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation, to foster deeper understanding between the Muslim world and the West.
