The pensioner’s Fiat Punto was taken during the theft after the suspect grabbed the key, but the car was later recovered at the entrance to Nelson Avenue.

The previous day, a woman returned to her home in Ecclesmachan Road in Uphall to discover the property had been entered and several items of jewellery and a digital camera worth a total of around £1000 had been taken.

A police spokesman said: “On each of these occasions the suspects either tried or were successful in gaining entry to a property and making off with the occupant’s belongings.

“Our communities are reminded to always ensure their properties are locked up securely whenever they are out or when they retire to bed.”
