Illegal road adverts on the increase

ILLEGAL advertising on West Lothian’s roads has increased over recent months, with the economic downturn being blamed as one of the main causes, the council has heard.

Currently, advertising is regulated by both planning and roads-related legislation and by the council in respect of its own land and property.

The council has dedicated resources for a number of years now and, despite notable success, controlling the problem remains a significant challenge.

Robert De Bold, executive councillor for the environment, said: “Fly-posting and vehicle-based advertising, including trailer-ads, currently present the greatest cause for concern, although the issue of A-Boards on footways is a growing problem.

“The council has worked hard over recent years to combat the problem through better coordination between services but there’s no doubt that the current economic climate has increased the difficulties that we face.”

“Illegal advertising can have an adverse effect on the appearance and safety of our communities, and on the public road network in particular.”
