Homeowners warned to keep doors secure

POLICE have warned residents to use mortise locks on their front doors after a recent spate of housebreakings.

Break-ins were carried out in the Stockbridge area last month, including addresses in Raeburn Place, Hamilton Place, Inverleith Avenue and Eildon Street.

Officers said the method used by the thief was simply forcing the front doors, which in many of the cases were only secured by a cylinder rim or "Yale" lock.

Pc Greig Stephen, Stockbridge community beat officer, said: "This highlights the need to ensure that if you have a mortise lock please make sure that you use it.

"The warm weather brings a tendency for many people to leave doors and windows open and I would ask that you make sure that you have checked that you have secured your premises when you retire for the evening."
