Holyrood bans debating chamber tweeting

HOLYROOD politicians have been banned from sending Twitter messages from the Scottish Parliament’s debating chamber.

Presiding Officer Tricia Marwick has ruled against following the example set by the House of Commons when it voted last month to allow members to use electronic devices in the chamber and “tweet” during debates.

Today Lothians Labour MSP Kezia Dugdale – a high-profile tweeter – backed the ban.

She said: “It’s hard enough to get constructive debate on issues that matter. I think the chamber deserves the respect of people’s attention when they are in there.”

She also dismissed the idea that the ruling left the Scottish Parliament looking more old-fashioned than Westminster.
