‘Hogmanayday’ celebrations take alternative route

Fresh from winning gold at the European Curling Championships in Moscow last week, Eve Muirhead tested the ice in advance of Glasgow’s “Hogmanayday” celebrations as the city prepared for an alternative to its traditional New Year festivities.

A day-long series of events will see the George Square ice rink turned over to curling as the Royal Caledonian Curling Club offers everyone the opportunity to try out the sport.

Ms Muirhead and Olympic gold winner and Team GB coach Rhona Martin will be on hand on the day to offer top tips.

Ms Muirhead said: “I think it’s wonderful everyone has the chance to try one of Scotland’s national sports on the day of one of Scotland’s biggest parties.”

Instead of the usual party, revellers will be able to participate in a free family-friendly party from noon till 10pm.

The city council scrapped its traditional New Year arrangements on the grounds of cost.

There will be a children’s zone with activities organised by the Glasgow Science Centre, street theatre, story telling and Scottish-themed arts and crafts.

No ticket is needed but when the venue is full there will be a queuing system in operation.
