Historic town centre is set for revamp

A £2.5 million scheme to regenerate Dalkeith town centre is set to get the go-ahead.

Full details of the five-year revamp are to be presented to Midlothian councillors later this month.

Work will involve sprucing up the town's historic buildings, while businesses will be invited to apply for a grant for other improvement projects.

Project manager Rod Lugg said the scheme had the potential to transform the town centre.

"There is so much history and potential in Dalkeith, and this project aims to help local businesses and property owners maximise the available opportunities."

Councillor Alex Bennett, chairman of Dalkeith Business Renewal, said: "The scheme will increase education and training in building skills that will assist in improving the historic buildings of the town centre and provide jobs."

The Heritage Lottery Fund has already earmarked 991,000 for the scheme, with other funding coming from Midlothian Council and Historic Scotland. Colin McLean, head of the Heritage Lottery Fund for Scotland, said: "We want to maximise Dalkeith's heritage to help attract people."

News of the revamp comes after Dalkeith was nominated for the Carbuncle awards, which highlight Britain's worst architecture.
