Help people beat loneliness with fulfilling charity work

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to find people willing to spare a few hours to become a "befriender" for a city charity.

Edinburgh-based ECAS, which supports people with physical and learning disabilities, said two hours a week can make "a world of difference" to people needing company.

Training, expenses and ongoing support are provided in return for helping others regain a social life and enjoy activities.

A taster session for would-be volunteers will be held next Wednesday at the Melting Pot on Rose Street from 5-6pm.

Rosiaina Browning, ECAS befriending project manager, said: "Being a befriender is such a rewarding and important role. There are so many people who have become socially isolated due to their disability – some never leave the house or see anyone else for months on end.

"We hope the taster evening will inspire new volunteer befrienders to come on board."
