Heartwarming end to Jambo Jimmy’s bus horror story

But Hearts-daft Jimmy Campbell was treated to an extra-special post-match party from his hospital bed – alongside goal hero Darren Barr and the Scottish Cup.

Moments after watching his side lift the cup, Jimmy suffered serious injuries when he became pinned against a car park wall by a supporters bus near Hampden.

The father-of-one was left with a ruptured spleen, bruised kidneys and widespread muscle damage after being caught unaware by the turning bus.

After the News told of the 27-year-old’s plight, he was treated to an impromptu victory party at Glasgow Victoria Infirmary when Barr, pictured right celebrating his goal, arrived with a signed shirt and the trophy.

Jimmy said: “It’s more than made up for missing the celebrations. Not only did I get to meet a Hearts legend but also holding the Scottish Cup and getting a signed shirt was amazing.

“I could not keep the smile off my face all night – and with all the pain it’s been hard to keep a smile.”

The Hearts defender-turned-midfielder talked Jimmy through the game and victory parade before revealing a little insider gossip about departing players.

“When he walked in he joked saying ‘Sorry Rudi can’t make it, so you’re stuck with me!’ and came across like a really nice, genuine guy. He said he had heard and couldn’t believe what had happened. He also said I should have been out partying not lying in hospital.

“We talked about the game and the parade and he said he still couldn’t believe it. He also said he never thought there would be as big a turnout on Sunday as there was – and said it was the best feeling ever. He also said he was gutted to see Rudi Skacel and Ian Black leave the club.”

Asked what it was like to hold the cup, supermarket worker Jimmy said: “To think there have been so many great players over the years who have lifted the cup – and so many that have never had the chance – and I got a chance to hold it.”

Barr said of the visit: “I was only too happy to visit Jimmy to pass on the squad’s best wishes. We were all shocked when we heard about his accident. It was a dreadful thing to happen to him, especially after being in such great spirits after cheering us on. Hopefully he makes a full recovery.”

A Hearts spokesman said: “We wanted to do what we could to help lift’s Jimmy’s spirits after such a traumatic experience. We would like to thank the Glasgow Victoria’s assistance in the matter and would like to wish Jimmy a full and speedy recovery.”
